Description
The Agia Pelagia Cave, nestled near Feloti Bay on Kythera's southwestern coast, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and spiritual heritage. This cave, housing a chapel dedicated to Saint Pelagia, offers visitors a serene retreat amidst the island's rugged landscape.
Situated below Mount Agia Elessa, the cave is accessible via a dirt road that begins just before the entrance to Chora, Kythira's capital. While the journey requires careful navigation, the path rewards travelers with stunning views of the Cretan Sea and the nearby islet of Chytra. The final approach involves a short walk from a fisherman's cottage near Feloti Bay, leading to the cave's entrance.
The chapel within the cave is one of three on the island dedicated to Saint Pelagia, all traditionally located near the sea. Historical records mention the church as early as 1669. The cave's interior features natural formations, with water dripping from the ceiling into clay basins, adding to its tranquil ambiance.
Historically, the feast day of Saint Pelagia in May and October drew large gatherings from nearby villages, such as Drymonas and Chora. Devotees would assemble the night before, engaging in all-night festivities that underscored the chapel's role in the local community.
The cave is open to visitors and relies on natural light, offering an unaltered experience of its serene environment. While not a commercial tourist site, its accessibility allows for personal exploration and meditation. Given the terrain, a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 is recommended for the journey.
