Description
An impressive sight is the sinking of the Russian cargo ship Nordland, half-submerged in the seaside village of Diakofti. On August 29, 2000, the ship was stranded on the islet of prasonisi, and the cause was its crew getting drunk. The engine room was flooded, and there was a fuel leak, contaminating the nearby shore. The ship is currently submerged, with its stern about 30 meters deep and its bow off. The shipwreck has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kythera and has been rated a popular diving spot. Both Greek and foreign divers, including diving schools, arrive at the spot.
