    Description

The cave of Agia Sofia of Kalamos is one of the three caves bearing the same name in Kythira, the most important one being in Mylopotamos. The cave has not been explored and mapped. The chapel in the cave’s entrance is dedicated to Saint Sophia, and a great religious festival is hosted here on September 17th. In 1998, an attempt of illegal trade of antiquities was exposed and ceramic sherds were found inside the cave. These sherds revealed human presence on the island since the Late Neolithic Period I (approximately 5300 – 4800 BC). The vase on display today in the Archaeological Museum of Kythira is a characteristic sample. Tours in the cave are not allowed.
