Kythira Population

Kythera Town

Kythira is an island where numbers only tell half the story, as its population experiences impressive shifts depending on the time of year and the historical period.

The Permanent Population

According to official data from the latest census (2021), the permanent population of the Municipality of Kythira stands at 3,644 residents (of which about 39 live on the neighboring island of Antikythira). These residents are distributed across more than 60 small and large villages, with the most significant settlements in terms of population being Potamos, Livadi, and Chora (the capital).

Historical Data

In the past, Kythira was much more densely populated. At the end of the 19th century (1879), the island reached its historical peak, exceeding 13,200 residents. However, massive waves of emigration during the 20th century—primarily to Australia, the USA, and Athens—dramatically reduced the number of permanent residents, hitting a historical low of 3,107 in 1991. Since then, the population has shown a relative stabilization.

The Summer Transformation

The dynamic changes radically during the summer months. During the tourist season, the island’s population multiplies spectacularly. Kytherian expatriates (“Tsirigotes” of the diaspora), internal migrants returning to their family homes, as well as thousands of Greek and foreign tourists, flood the island. In the summer, Kythira is bustling with life, and the number of people on the island can easily exceed 15,000 in August.
